About Me

  • January 28, 2025

I’m Ben Hollar, a full-stack software developer who calls Cincinnati, Ohio home.

Professional Work

I’ve been working as a software developer for over 7 years, specializing in creating geospatial data visualization and analysis tools. The software I’ve helped build empowers data analysts to find hidden relationships between different datasets, and to quickly refine algorithm-generated data into reliable reports.

I began my career while studying at the University of Cincinnati, where I graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Science in the spring of 2021. While studying, I worked as a co-op at Etegent Technologies Ltd., a research and development company that specializes in creating machine learning and data analytics tools for the Department of Defense.

Since my graduation, I’ve worked full-time at Etegent where I’ve worked on a variety of projects. Most significantly, I worked for multiple years as the lead maintainer and contributor to a web application (C# / .NET + Angular) that allows analysts to identify relationships between geospatial datasets using intensity maps. More recently, I’m developing a desktop application using Python and PyQt6 to visualize and refine tracks of objects identified by remote sensors.

Personal Life

Even at home, I find myself frequently sitting in front of a computer, watching copious amounts of YouTube videos, playing single-player video games, crafting my homebrew Ghosts of Saltmarsh D&D 5e campaign, or idly dreaming of personal software development projects.

When I’m not in front of a computer, you’ll likely find me spending time with my fiancée, Roxanne, and our black labrador retriever mix, Rudi. We love watching movies, searching for waterfalls on scenic hikes, and playing board games like Wingspan or Ravine, to name a few.

I also enjoy taking photos — especially of wildlife. It’s a great excuse to get outside and appreciate the environment around us. Beyond that, I’ve also been known to sing, play the trombone, and whistle idly almost all day long.

A Note On Social Media

I think it’s important for all of us to have a space to ourselves online; it’s why this website exists! But social media has, to me, increasingly detracted from my life and I think it has negatively impacted many others. So, while I do still have some accounts on some platforms I feel more comfortable using (and link to them on this site), I don’t tend to post often. If you’re curious what I’ve been up to, the best place to check is my most recent blog posts, or to reach out to me directly (by email or by phone, if you have my number).
